Criteria for Prospective Board Members

Essential Attributes:

  • An active member of an Evangelical church.
  • A strong commitment to the ongoing development of King’s and a willingness to dedicate time and skills to support this process.
  • A willingness to learn, understand and develop in the responsibilities related to the governance of a school under the Incorporated Associations Act of SA.

Constitutionally, the Board is required to have a majority of members of SABU affiliated churches and at times this may influence possible appointments.

Desirable Attributes and Abilities:

  • Organisational Governance/Directorship experience.
  • Legal (w.r. to Corporations law, etc) experience.
  • Educational/teaching experience, other than on current King’s staff.
  • Strategic thinker:
    • Able to ‘step outside the organisation’ and objectively view the customer and other stakeholders environment, within a long-term context.
    • Forward thinker and planner but recognise importance of significant details in the present.
  • Commercial acumen
    • Understanding business environment and using available resources effectively to provide ‘added value’.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
    • Understand the importance of relationships
    • Visible and approachable
    • Assertive, ask questions, know how to listen
    • Know what is happening around them.
  • Analytical skills
    • Attention to detail
    • Results oriented
    • Resilient and tenacious
  • Team player
    • Understand that the Board wields collective authority to communicate policy directives forcibly and unambiguously.
    • Everyone works for the good of the organisation and has a shared vision.
    • Is willing to learn and appreciate the different functions of governance and management.
  • Skills in an area that are required to assist one or more of the Committees at King’s, e.g. planning, information technology, architecture, building, human resources, accounting, marketing
  • An interest in the concepts, continuity and development of independent schools.

King’s has adopted a set of Governing Policies and the Code of Conduct is included in that document to give some idea of expectations.
